Understanding Early Childhood Development

What Every Parent Should Know – Birth to Age 5

What Is Early Childhood Development?

Early childhood development refers to the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth that occurs from birth through age 5. These early years are critical—children’s brains develop more rapidly during this time than at any other point in life.

The 5 Key Areas of Development:

Cognitive (Thinking & Learning)

Problem-solving

Memory and concentration

Curiosity and exploration

Language & Communication

Understanding and using words

Listening and following directions

Expressing needs and ideas

Social & Emotional

Building relationships

Managing emotions

Developing empathy and confidence

Physical (Gross & Fine Motor)

Running, jumping, climbing (gross motor)

Drawing, stacking blocks, self-care (fine motor)

Self-Help/Adaptive Skills

Feeding, dressing, toileting

Learning routines and independence

Why It Matters:

Early experiences shape how children learn, behave, and relate to others. Nurturing environments and positive relationships with caregivers boost development and school readiness.

How You Can Support Your Child at Home

✅ Talk, read, and sing with your child every day

✅ Encourage safe exploration and play

✅ Offer choices and let them try things on their own

✅ Establish routines and set gentle limits

✅ Praise efforts and celebrate small milestones

Watch for Developmental Milestones

Children grow at their own pace, but if you notice your child isn’t meeting typical milestones, talk to your pediatrician or early childhood educator. Early support makes a big difference!

Book Breaks for Month of March

George Washington's Mother

By Jean Fritz

Mary Washington smoked a pipe, hated dress up clothes and didn't believe what she read in the newspapers. Learn more interesting facts about this fascinating woman in this colorful biography.

Before reading the book, have your child guess about the book. Place the following items in a bag: newspaper, gingerbread pan, money, rock, pipe, a piece of dress up clothing, and a picture of George Washington. Show the items and Ask:

What do all these items have in common? Answer: George Washington's Mother.

Then read the book aloud and let your child figure out how each item relates to Mary Washington.
